Coming From Michigan, arriving in Niagara Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday we begin our drive toward the mountain.
Obviously we plan to take our time to get there Thursday, taking back roads and exploring up state NY. Anybody have any suggestions for places to experience or see in-between Hunter and Niagara?

Lake George would be about half way and would be a good place to stop and explore. Cooperstown would be a bit out of the way but if you like baseball and beer... Saratoga would be along your route if you are into horse racing.

Saratoga Springs is a beautiful town with nice shops and some good restaurants. There is a nice, newer Hampton Inn there, that has a nice bar/ restaurant attached and down the street from Peabody's if you want pub food and sports.
I'm a fan of the hot springs and they really relax you if you can get past the brown water. I think the best is Roosevelt spa.

I grew up in the area. Actually, Lake George would be out of your way, Saratoga a little bit out of the way, and Cooperstown would be right on your way if you are taking backroads. Cooperstown, Saratoga, and Ithaca are all towns worthy of an overnight stop. If you are a beer drinker, stop in Utica (right off the thruway) for a tour of the Saranac Brewery, then on to Cooperstown for a tour and tasting at Ommegang. Lots of places to stay in all price ranges in Cooperstown.

Misterbrow grew up on the mean streets of Kingston and lived in Utica for a year. At this point in the conversation... Bang it down the Thruway and go to Cooperstown. The Thruway (the Iroquois trail)from CaNada south will put you in a NY state of mind to click with the Native American Opening at MJ and from the thruway to Cooperstown to Hunter: all the backroads you need.
Ommegang is what I was alluding to. Open fermentation tanks are a sight to behold. Catch a little baseball HOF...
My family did a run one time from NY to Nashville, to Indy for the Brickyard, to Chicago and Wrigley, to Detroit for a Tigers' game, through 'Merica's hat, and back into NY via Niagra. Kingston to Cooperstown before the days of GPS for Rizzuto and Stargell were trips.

There are a lot of nice wineries and vineyards in upstate New York, particilarly around the Ithaca area, and Route 17. You can taste your way until you can't drive anymore, then find a place to crash

Appreciating the ideas, keep 'em coming!!!
Little more info here - the plan is back roads in, avoiding expressways to the best of our ability. Likely looking to just pitch a tent and camp rather than stay in a hotel, what's another layer or three of dirt gonna do? Good beer selections never hurt, and looking for some of those smaller towns off the beaten path.
Again, thank you for the feed back, it's definitely helping expand our options!

Drop down off 90 to rt20 - nice drive! Head up to rt8 and check out the beautiful ADKs...
Also - why not head down to Woodstock before which is only 30 minutes from Hunter..
