Also interested in this topic, as my friends and I decided to go with mountain top car camping this year. I'm primarily interested in how well you can hear the music from your campsite, where the security checkpoint is (ie do you have to walk to the bottom of the slope or is there another entrance at the top), and how the crowd/security vibe is.

Last year there was an entrance at the top for car campers. A lot less people going through the entrance too so that is always a plus as well

I hear it is really good but can't comment on any specifics first hand. My feeling is it's a bit expensive but probably worth it.

From what I remember seeing, it was flat land and anyone who camped on the mountain knows, flat land is a premium. I kept rolling off my airmattress from the pitch I was at. I'm giving mountain top a try this year, hopefully they don't oversell parking creating a crowded experience

Any insight on whether you can hear the music from mountain top car camping sites? Based on the map, it seems like you should be able to, but I guess it is possible that the terrain or tree lines could obstruct the sound too much. I'd love to be able to hear some of the music from the stage while enjoying my own beers.

Looking at the pricing. We have not been able to attend for a few years now and I am a bit confused. The mountaintop car camping is a separate fee or does this include your admission & car camping? If I am reading this correctly, I have to buy a 4 day pass with camping and then the Mountaintop Car Camping on top of that? My husband and I would like to attend, but not sure how if close to $800. Am I reading this write?

Michelle,
That seems about right.
The alternative is less expensive parking but the pricing of the tickets at now at 239 each for the four day admission and camping pass.
I suggest you call the ticket agent at 877-569-7767 with additional questions.

Mountain jam wants more money.....but, can ya blame them. For me, I'll camp on that big ol' hill for a few more bucks then when I first did in 2007. But if u camp on the plateau, just walk to the top of the hill and you'll hear music, a fence might be in front of you, but you'll hear it.

Michele - if you haven't been to Mountain Jam in a few years, you may have been there before car camping was even an option. At my first couple Mtn Jams, the only option was to park your car and haul your gear onto the mountain. Now there are numerous different options, all with different prices. If you only get the GA+camping pass, you will park offsite and a shuttle will bring you and your gear to the front gate, where you can then haul your gear up the mountain and set up camp (tent camping on the map below). If you would rather camp next to your car, there are various options for that. Mountain top camping at $250 is the most expensive non-VIP camping area, but you can absolutely do Mtn Jam for far less than $800 for a couple. mountainjam.com/map/

Thanks guys! Yeah, have not been back since 2011, which was our first and only Mtn Jam experience (and our first BIG festival). We have been trying to get back every year but, well, life happens. I will have to wait until we get our tax refund and go from there. Had such a great time the last time and would love to do it again. Also checking out All Good and Peach, which are closer to where we live but have not attended either of them before, so a bit leery. Nothing like starting our festival experience with the best!

I did mountain top camping last year and it was probably the best move I made for my 5th mtn. jam. The spot was amazing, we literally didn't miss a band, and never had to leave our site if we wanted to. If you don't want to be up until 3am though every night (cuz of the music) don't go here. The crowd here is a little older then the other side of the mountain (we camped next to cops, some 30+ guys and a guy who just had heart surgery but were all good guys). The ONLY complaint I have about Mountain Top was the separate entrances. We had friends in regular camping and we had to hike UP the mountain and then back down just to bring beer and accessories to the other side without getting hassled. 2nd "complaint" would be that you just are constantly hiking up the mountain when you want to go back to your site, but seriously, if you complain about that then you should not purchase mountain top camping to begin with! The plus of 2 entrances though is that your camping closer to the entrance than any other spot at mtn. jam, AND you have access to the field in the AM (not really, but no one is around to tell you not to)
