Hey, I've been slacking on the board lately b/c of crazy home life but I had a blast at Mountain Jam X. It really bums me out to read about all the people getting busted for small things like weed. There were over 375,000 more people at Woodstock than were at MJ X and only 30 more arrests. That's unfortunate. I personally haven't had a problem in 4 years with security but I guess I've been lucky. The biggest problem I had this year was one security guard came in the crowd by the main stage after we snuck in some beers and he told us to chug them. He kept apologizing too. I can deal with that. I did see countless red shirt security guys going through the crowd looking to bust people or whatever. Most seem to not really care, like the dude that made us chug, but there were a few that thought they were tough guys, bumping into people and looking to find illegal things. One in particular kind of annoyed me, but I didn't have any issues personally with him.
Positives:
-The music. Every year I get mad at myself b/c I miss a few bands that I really want to see and it happened again, but saw a whole lot of awesome bands. Allmans were great. Was a little disappointed that they advertised to play 1st 2 albums plus more and they didn't do the "plus more" part but it's OK. They sounded as tight as ever. Warren and Derek going back and forth never ever gets old. Mule was on top of their game. My fav Mule at Mountain Jam ever maybe. Especially liked the choice of covers. Creep made my night. Reignwolf did just what I thought he would do. Blew my mind. Was right up by the stage for him and the energy was HIGH. Avetts was just pure beautiful. From the sun parting perfectly with the clouds, to the guy pumping out the bubbles, to Bobby joining them on stage. It was just a really cool moment. Moon Taxi was my surprise delight of the festival. Warren came out and shredded and they ended with a Rage Against the Machine tune. Really fun set. Damien Marley was a blast, Franti was Franti. I dig the corny love everyone thing he does. It's the way he does it I guess, Chris Robinson Brotherhood was one of my favs, Pretty Lights was an experience. That EDM scene kind of scares me though. They let in kids just for his set I heard and his crowd is like the Walking Dead. Young kids taking too much shit that they most likely can't handle. Maybe I'm just getting old. His set was pretty cool though, even though that's not usually my scene. Blitzen Trapper and Robert Randolph were both amazing too.
-The people. Met back up with our group from last year and they brought a few more this year. Plus had some neighbors join in. It's incredible how well everyone got along. It's like a family vibe. A community. Also, really stoked that finally met Soulmate, Saint & Mr Brow. Met Anto briefly too. Random how I met Saint. lol Actually bumped into him a few times. Wish I could have hung out with all u guys longer. Time goes to fast on the mountain. Missed the picnic too which was pretty lame of me. Planned on going but woke up really slow Sat and needed a few hours of recovery time so I wouldn't miss Blitzen Trapper, who was one of the bands I wanted to see most. Great set, but I do wish I made the picnic to meet everyone else and to hang out longer. Me & Mr Brow are gonna meet up next year and go to the picnic together. lol There is always so many cool people on the mountain. Even the random people I gave high 5's to seemed really cool.
-Swimming. Finally made it to "the river" as my buddy called it. I've heard about it before but never did it until this year. It was more like jumping in and jumping out because the water was so cold but it was the perfect hangover cure and it felt really good a few minutes later.
-The weather. Enough said.
-The Mountain. Love that place. Home away from home. It is the best in the morning when it's quiet and all the drunks are sleeping. lol The 2 days or so i happened to get up early were truly enjoyed.
Cons:
-Missed Umphrey's Thurs. I blame it on Mtn Jam's schedule coordinator for allowing me to arrive around noon and not scheduling a band I really cared about until 8 PM(DSO). Indulged a little too much and early into Umph's set I realized that it was time for me to go back to the tent and call it a night. I was a little ashamed but didn't regret it the next day, for energy sake. Also missed Trampled By Turtles & Tedeschi Trucks. Both were choices I made but was bummed that I didn't go down for them both. On the bright side, I could hear both really well from our site, which was closer this year then we've ever been. Tedeschi Trucks sounded incredible. Should have went down for them.
-Security. Just from what I've read. I had conversations with a few of the dudes and they were cool. I'm sure there were your typical douchebags but I tried to stay away from the ones that looked like it. I actually had fun trying to sneak beers in. The searches when entering were a bit excessive. Sam Cutler's article was scary. Makes me think that Mountain Jam will not last a whole lot longer if this continues to get worse. That would really suck.
-Time going by too quickly. Next year I am looking into being cloned so I can be at 3 or 4 places at once. So many things you want to do but u can't do them all. Was having a lot of fun at the campsite which made me miss a bunch of other things.
-It rained the last night when we were sleeping. hahaha......just kidding. Not spoiled. I appreciated every inch of sunshine.
Mountain Jam somehow gets better every year. Last year's weather was horrible on Thurs & Fri and those were 2 of my favorite days ever. This year was great b/c of all the new people I met and the music which never fails. It really is emotional for me leaving that place. See you next year!
