I had a crazy epiphany about music because of a few things that happened at Mountain Jam this year..
It has to do with creating musical energy from calm spaces/grooves... Wilco does this song Via Chicago where the band grooves along with a Wilco vibe - Tweedy singing and strumming... And suddenly everyone except Tweedy goes apeshit crfazy while Tweedy just strums and sings like nothings happening... As much as I wanted to jump up and down with the crazy playing - I focused in on Tweedy's calmness.... was wild.. Same thing with Theivery Corp.. Bass player goes to the front of the stage... He's usually jumping up and down and marching but stands motionless for the whole song - while the band is going crazy... The focus was on the calmness - again...
Still processing this... hahahaha...

We were at SPAC years ago for ABB. This big ass spider drops down from the lights and is like two feet from Derek's face. It's all backlight with lights and looks like the spider from IT. We're in the first five rows yelling and screaming, but Derek is just grooving along. I'm thinking I'm about to watch one one the greatest guitar players ever get bit by this this thing, then Oteill notices and tries to get Derek's attention, then Warren... then finally Derek opens his eyes after a solo and with a smile gives a look like, "Hello Mr Spider." and the spider zipped back up to its web.

I totally get what you are saying. Went to the show with a buddy of mine who had never seen Wilco before. Says to me during Via Chicago, "hey I think Tweedy is playing a different song than the rest of the band." ------I know I'll make it back One of these days and turn on your TV To watch a man with a face like mine Being chased down a busy street When he gets caught, I wont get up And I wont go to sleep I'm coming home, I'm coming home Via Chicago

That Wilco thing was wild. It was definitely a highlight for me. I am a Wilco fan but didn't know that they do that for that song. That made it better because I wasn't expecting it. My buddy wasn't either. We looked at the dude standing by us and said "Was that supposed to happen?" and he was obviously a big Wilco fan told us it was and that it will happen again and it did. I can imagine that the people who ate some heavy duty treats who weren't expecting it may have been caught a little off guard. lol I thought Wilco was amazing. Nels Cline is fun to watch. There are 3 or 4 songs where he just loses his mind at the end and it's a blast to jam along too. Was cool how they brought how Jason Isbell for California Stars too. I thought the setlist was on point. And yeah, now I'm a big Via Chicago fan.
