New York's Governors Ball canceled the entirety of their Sunday slate, including a headlining set by Kanye West, "due to severe weather and a high likelihood of lightning in the area." "The safety of fans, artists and crew always comes first," festival organizers wrote in a statement Sunday.
Death Cab for Cutie, Bat for Lashes, Two Door Cinema Club, Gary Clark Jr., Chvrches and a surprise set by Prophets of Rage were among the artists whose Sunday sets were called off. Vince Staples and Joey Bada$$, both of whom saw their New York City concerts cancelled this week due to the fallout from the shooting at a T.I. concert, also witnessed their Governors Ball sets get nixed due to the weather.
"All customers who purchased a Sunday ticket and Sunday transportation ticket through the Gov Ball ticketing page will receive a refund, while those who bought the three-day pass will receive a prorated refund.
Rain showered down on the crowd throughout Saturday at Randall's Island, with the weather situation escalating to the point that organizers casted doubt on whether Sunday's bill would happen. This morning, organizers informed festivalgoers that the start of Sunday's sets would be delayed at the very least.
"At Gov Ball, our top priority is your well-being and the well-being of talent and staff. If weather conditions are deemed unsafe for the festival, Sunday’s show will be delayed or cancelled," organizers wrote. "We constantly monitor weather conditions, and we work closely with the appropriate City agencies, including NYC Parks, NYPD, and NYC Office of Emergency Management to determine the best and safest course of action."
The weather in and around New York also forced the cancellation of the outdoor portion of the Hot 97 Summer Jam. The "Festival Village" stage at that Met Life Stadium event was scheduled to feature concerts by Chance the Rapper, Desiigner, Curren$y and more.
Typically held the weekend after Memorial Day in New York, Governors Ball has previously seen weather meddle with the festival. In 2013, torrential rains and high winds forced Kings of Leon to postpone their Friday night headlining set; luckily, the band were able to reschedule their performance for the following night. However, the 2014 and 2015 festivals proceeded with Mother Nature's interference.
